Throughout the film, the main character has a pet dog, who is seen performing such mild action as sitting/standing/lying, being held or petted, and walking/running on or off leash. For all of these scenes, trainers used hand signals and verbal commands to cue the mild action, which the trained dog was accustomed to performing. The barking/growling was also a trained behavior.

In the scene where the girls run outside with their dog following them, at all times the dog was accompanied by its experienced trainer to and from the set. Prior to shooting the scene, the dog was brought to set and allowed to acclimate with the crew and actors. The trainer put the dog on a stay at the stairs and went over to the sofa area and cued the dog with the clicker. Water was available on set for the dog. Food rewards were given frequently between rehearsals and takes and also when the dog was in the rest area.

In the scene where the family drives in the car and there are two dogs in the backseat, prior to shooting the scene the trainer helped the dog get into the car. The dog sat between the three girls in back seat. The girl in the middle held the lead. The car was on the process trailer being pulled along a street controlled by production.
