In the scene where the kids get together under a freeway pass, push over a tire, and we see a bunch of rats running around, before one of the kids shoots at the rats with a gun, nailing a couple of them, the trainers brought the cages to the set with the rats inside. Prior to shooting the scene the trainers baited the rats to their mark behind the tire. They also placed fake, exploding rats near them. Trainers placed wet dog food to keep the live rats away from the exploding rat. Once released, the rats moved randomly within the tires and debris inside the rat corral. On action, one of the young actors flipped the plywood board back and away from the tires, exposing the rats randomly moving around the severed hand. They cut. Then the special effects guy fired dust pellet guns towards the pillar near the rats, not coming close to the rats. Then the actors started dry firing their hand guns towards the rats. At that moment, the fake rat explodes and another special effects gun squirts fake blood onto one of the actors’ shirts. The real rats were never close to the exploding rats. All the rats were placed back in their boxes and brought back to the vans.

In the scene where the guy sits at the table counting money and holds a dog, prior to shooting the scene the actor and the dog were acclimated with each other. Then the trainer brought the dog to the actor and placed him on his lap. On action, the actor fed the dog treats and potato chips while actors delivered their lines. On cut, the animal action was reset and repeated. Everything went well.
