In the scene where the repairman comes into an apartment and sees a cat in the background and he picks him up, prior to shooting the cat’s owner brought him from holding area to the set. The owner re-introduced the cat to the actor who would be holding the animal as part of the action. The actor had previously worked with the cat and was comfortable holding the animal. On action, the owner released the cat on its cue and the actor picked the cat up.

In the scene where the actress feeds cat and picks him up, they used same cat, who was acclimated with actor. They also used the food the cat usually eats.

In the scene where the actor looks down at his coffee cup and sees a cockroach crawling on the rim of the cup, prior to filming the wrangler established a plan to prevent the cockroach from escaping. The scene set-ups involved a tight shot on the cockroach crawling on the coffee mug while actor raised the coffee cup off the table. This required that the handler remained right next to the mug and cockroach during filming so he could quickly step in to cover and contain the roach if the insect was to come off of the mug. Just before shooting the wrangler moved a cockroach from the holding container into a separate carrying container. Then the mug was filled with room temperature coffee up to the top edge of the cylindrical object. Once actor sat on his mark at the kitchen table and the prop coffee mug had been placed on the table, handler removed the cockroach from the carrying container and placed the insect on the brim of the mug. Then the handler removed his hand from the frame and stood directly next to the insect and mug to closely watch the roach.

On action, actor held the mug by the handle and raised the mug from the table, toward camera, and then lowered the mug back down to the table, away from camera. The cockroach walked around the brim of the mug in circles as the actor went through those motions. This action was filmed in a series of 5 minutes.

On cut, the handler collected the cockroach.
Due to late notification and scheduling conflicts, American Humane did not monitor some of the cat action.
